Job Summary

Geisinger is seeking a Senior Researcher to lead our newly funded Medical Marijuana Research Program. The Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM) Medical Marijuana Academic Clinical Research Center (ACRC), certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, is a part of the state’s medical marijuana research program. Through this state-certified program, GCSOM has partnered with Story of PA LLC to develop a world-class medical marijuana research program. The Director of the GCSOM ACRC will lead and design the framework to build a sustainable, nationally recognized research program in medical marijuana research. The Director will oversee $30 million dollars of funding and be expected to grow the program through additional external grants. The Director will work closely to engage faculty, trainees, and support staff in the research program initiatives and to promote collaborative opportunities both within GCSOM and across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Director will craft a 10-year vision for the program that aligns with Geisinger’s values and capitalizes on existing translational research expertise in addiction medicine, pharmacy, population health, behavioral sciences, bioethics, data science, and genomics. This program will be embedded within Geisinger, a large integrated health system in Pennsylvania, with a longstanding commitment to research, education, and clinical excellence. Faculty have access to vast data resources, including longitudinal electronic medical record (EMR) data spanning more than 25 years with over three million covered lives, claims, genomic, and environmental data. Geisinger’s medical marijuana program will develop opportunities to contribute to the growing field of research on medical marijuana and its impact on patient health and health care systems. We also envision enhanced curriculum development to provide the next generation of clinicians with the tools they need to provide the best healthcare for our patients given the increasing use and legalization of medical and recreational marijuana. The program currently supports studies that focus on patient and provider perspectives and knowledge of medical marijuana, influences on traditional medication use and delivery, and impact on patient care and outcomes. Geisinger has full and independent oversight of all research studies and publication of results. The Director will report to the Chief Scientific Officer of Geisinger, Dr. Christa Martin, and chair the ACRC leadership team. An opportunity to lead the newly formed research Department of Health System Sciences will be considered for qualified candidates. Candidates must hold a doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, MD, or equivalent). The position is open rank; however, priority will be given to Professor level candidates. Research expertise in medical marijuana or related research as well as prior leadership experience are required. In addition to driving direction and growth of the ACRC program, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain an externally funded research program and provide service to the health system, their profession, and the community. The candidate must have a record of extramural grant funding as a Principal or Co-Investigator and publication of extensive, high-quality peer-reviewed collaborative research

Job Duties

  • Develops, maintains, and supervises a productive and nationally competitive research program; pursues independent funding for research and completes the goals and specific aims of externally funded projects.
  • Directs and supervises the day-to-day scientific work on research projects.
  • Provides oversight of staff and reviews and evaluates their work.
  • Provides technical and intellectual leadership for the research program including identification of the research question, formulation of the hypothesis, conducting the investigation, recording the observations, analyzing the data, drawing conclusions and preparing the completed work for publication.
  • Maintains national/international recognition through publications in high quality peer review journals, participation in peer review of grants and manuscripts, and presentations at other institutions, organizations, national and international meetings.
  • Leads mentoring committee activities for junior faculty, clinicians, postdocs, residents and fellows.
  • Provides a leading role in initiating collaborations with investigators, physicians and outside institutional lab groups; contributes professional and technical expertise in such collaborations.
  • Provides institutional service by participating in Departmental and System committees and meetings.
