Medical Laboratory Scientist Educator
Job Summary
Performs and reports various analyses from multiple specimen sources. Performs duties to provide the highest level of patient care and maximize patient satisfaction. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area. Participates in educational activities that include but are not limited to development of educational lecture, learning, and assessment materials in assigned courses; participation in program committees, participating in recruitment events, participating in program development and continuous quality improvement; and serving as a professional role model to facilitate the development and growth of medical laboratory science students
Job Duties
- Performs all duties of a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
- Teaches theory and clinical practice to medical laboratory science students
- May function in one or more laboratory division, working independently with minimal supervision
- Counsels, evaluates students as necessary
- Set up classroom laboratory sessions as needed as part of student clinical rotations
- Oversees the work of MLS students and other personnel as assigned through training, allocating and monitoring work
- Participates in recruitment activities (visiting HS or colleges)
- Devises clinical check lists for MLS students rotating through their area of responsibility
- Works with director to set up scheduling of clinical rotations and follows through with students to assign them to appropriate areas dependent on student progress
- Observes and evaluates students’ performance in actual clinical situations, assists, guides and instructs as necessary
- Lectures and gives classroom demonstrations on subjects and illustrates using microscopes, test kits, AV and other equipment
- Teaches courses in own area(s) of specialization; lectures and conducts student laboratory sessions
- Prepares assignments and examinations to determine student progress and grades
- Meets individually with students for feedback, evaulation, and progress counseling and support.
- Counsels students as needed and is available to conduct reviews after hours when necessary
- Maintains all required student records and prepares related reports
- Regularly reviews journals, scientific articles, appropriate textbooks to keep abreast of changing technologies and incorporates pertinent changes into educational material
- Performs technical duties and provides technical knowledge and support to staff and clients within a department of responsibility.
- Analyzes technical problems and resolves in accordance with established laboratory policies.
- Reviews test results, quality control records, proficiency testing results and preventative maintenance records.
- Ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems and Quality Assurance deviate from established performance specifications.
- May participate with the Director and other system colleagues in the development of new testing, validation and evaluation of new equipment, reagents, instrumentation and technologies.
- Maintains a working knowledge of applicable regulatory standards and ensures that compliance of standards is maintained.
- May participate in operational and technical management initatives.
- May collaborate with system-wide teams on operational and technical inititives.
- Encourages and engages in a service-oriented behavior designed to support and meet the needs of our various clients.
- Provides timely consultations and takes prompt action to correct problems and issues.
- Participates in educational and training activities to acquire new skills and maintain current proficiency.

Join our team dedicated to training the future of the Medical Laboratory profession through Geisinger's Medical Laboratory Science program!
This role is ideal for individuals passionate about educating and mentoring Medical Laboratory students. This role is in the educational branch of the career pathway that offers training and support in educational theory and practice AND will allow the individual to build their portfolio while elevating Geisinger's status in the MLS community.
This position will involve some travel (less than 25%) to Geisinger sites in all regions as well as travel to CE and high school/college recruiting events.
Preferred qualifications include an MS or specialty certification. Previous experience in training and educating is a plus.
This role will split time between faculty and analytical specialist/bench responsibilities as assigned. This role will have a weekend and holiday rotation. This position is non-exempt.
Education Qualification and Details
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an ASCP/NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science program OR;
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification OR;
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory
- ASCP certification
