Medical Education Faculty - Medical Director, Leahy Clinic
Job Summary
The Medical Director, Leahy Clinic (0.5 FTE), is a Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine physician faculty member responsible for overseeing, evaluating, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality medical care to clinic patients in alignment with the Clinic’s mission and vision.
Job Duties
The Medical Director, Leahy Clinic is responsible for the following:
Clinical Oversight and Quality of Care
- Work with student leaders to provide opportunity for students to participate in administration of the clinic for the purpose of their learning in health system science and their service learning experiences
- Collaborate with University of Scranton employed administrative and nursing leaders to ensure a smoothly running free clinic for the uninsured
- Provide overall medical oversight for medical services delivered by the Clinic
- Establish, review, and update clinical protocols, scope of services, and treatment guidelines
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards of care, patient safety practices, and ethical guidelines
- Serve as the final clinical authority for complex clinical issues and adverse event review
- Oversee quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
- Provide direct patient care as appropriate
Supervision, Teaching and Mentorship
- Provide medical oversight for residents, physicians, advanced practice providers, and ancillary staff in delivering high-quality, compassionate care during all hours of clinic operation
- Supervise resident and medical student learners
- Support volunteer clinicians
- In conjunction with attending and volunteer physicians, supervise students involved in patient care (e.g., medical and physician assistant students)
- Serve as collaborating physician for clinical pharmacists and nurse practitioners, and as supervisor of physician assistants, as needed
- Provide teaching, mentorship, and feedback to learners across disciplines, fostering an environment of professionalism and interprofessional teamwork
- Participate in clinic sessions, as feasible, to observe, teach, and support learners
Leadership and Administration
- Collaborate with the Administrative Director to guide clinic operations and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements (state, federal, local, OSHA, and other applicable guidelines)
- Serve as a senior advisor to student leadership and the Clinic’s executive board; coach and support students in leadership roles
- Partner with the Administrative Director and student leadership to implement, evaluate, and update organizational and strategic plans, including the Quality Assurance and Risk Plan
- Participate in long-term strategic planning and clinic development
- Collaborate with institutional leadership and community partners
- Assist with recruitment, credentialing, and retention of volunteer clinicians and preceptors, including support of the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) process
- Assist with fundraising, grant applications, marketing, and community outreach efforts; promote the Clinic within the community
Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure Clinic compliance with institutional policies, regulatory standards, and malpractice coverage requirements
- Support documentation standards, supervision requirements, and risk mitigation practices
- Oversee incident reporting, adverse event review, and quality assurance processes
- Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical programs
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with coordination of specialty care

Position Details
Qualifications:
Required:
- MD or DO with current, unrestricted medical license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, ideally with five or more years in clinical medical practice (preferably outpatient primary care medicine)
- Board certified (or board eligible) in a relevant primary care or specialty field
- Experience providing clinical care in underserved or community based settings
- Commitment to service and education
- Excellent communication and collaborative leadership skills
Preferred:
- Prior experience with student run clinics, academic medicine, and/or medical education
- Faculty appointment or eligibility for academic affiliation
Time Commitment:
- Estimated 20 hours per week
- Attendance at select clinical sessions, leadership meetings, and annual planning activities
