Staff Perfusionist
Job Summary
Provides perfusion support service through operation and maintenance of various extracorporeal equipment and instrumentation to support surgical procedures. Provides care for patients in a variety of age ranges. Must be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, or must complete the certification procedure within two years of employment.
Job Duties
- Operates and maintains extracorporeal equipment and instrumentation during surgery.
- Utilizes blood gas exchange devices and related systems, under accepted clinical protocol, to provide perfusion during adult, pediatric, and neonatal procedures.
- Maintains perfusion records and associated data.
- Takes appropriate action when abnormal situations arise.
- Operates, maintains, and monitors instrumentation and equipment to provide extracorporeal support to the various non-cardiac services.
- Handles and disposes of contaminated materials related to perfusion during surgical procedures, following standard aseptic techniques and Operating Room housekeeping policies.
- Assists with preparation of the Operating Room specifically related to perfusion requirements.
- Assists with selection and care of perfusion-related instruments and equipment.
- Completes and maintains perfusion records, forms, and charge sheets related to perfusion services.
- Participates in the organization and maintenance of electronic databases associated with perfusion services.
- Assists with research projects used to provide evidence of improved outcomes and patient management.
- Attends continuing education events, conferences, and in-services as directed or as required by the department pursuant to personnel needs and financial restrictions.
